CAMPAIGNS - ANIMALS IN ENTERTAINMENT
What You Can Do...
(Thanks to Troy Seidle)
BEFORE the circus arrives:
-
Try to get it canceled. Contact the organizers/sponsors of the circus and ask that they book an animal-free circus instead. Order a copy of the Plight of Performing Animals video, which documents the abuse that animals suffer in the entertainment industry, and make an appointment to show it to the organizers/sponsors of the circus.
-
Write an opinion piece for your local paper. This is a great opportunity to let people in your community know about the plight of performing animals and generate negative media for the upcoming circus.
WHILE the circus is in town:
-
Find out when and where the animals are being unloaded and be there with a camcorder and/or camera to document any problems. Download this checklist (65k PDF) and survey (40k PDF) to help identify possible problems. Call your local humane society or animal control agency immediately if you witness an animal in distress.
-
Organize a demonstration onng night. Consider peacefully leafleting (519k PDF)at every show.
-
Write a news release. If you are having a demonstration, let the media know. The Plight of Performing Animals is approved and suitable for broadcast, so encourage any TV stations that cover your demonstration to run compelling footage from the video on the news that night.
-
Write a letter to the editor of your local paper. This is a good way to raise any points that may not have been addressed in the media’s coverage of the issue.
AFTER the circus has left town:
-
Try to find out where the circus is going next and try to get activists mobilized in that area. Circus schedules will be posted on this site as soon as they’re available.
-
Start a legislative campaign to prohibit performing animal acts in your community. This has already happened in a number of Canadian jurisdictions, and it can happen in yours too! Anyone considering a legislative campaign should be sure to obtain a Circus Information Kit and a copy of the Plight of Performing Animals video from the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies.
