CAMPAIGNS - ANIMALS IN ENTERTAINMENT

Interest in and affection for animals leads many well-meaning people to visit zoos, marine parks, circuses, rodeos, and other displays or performing animal acts.
What most people do not realize, however, is that animals used for entertainment and displays are typically deprived of a normal existence, and may lack proper attention to their physical, psychological, social and behavioural needs.

Factors such as prolonged confinement, lack of exercise, lack of appropriate socialization or social groupings, and the inability to express natural behaviours, are all detrimental to the well-being of animals used in displays and travelling menageries. Animals used in performances are subjected to the additional stresses of being trained and required to perform tricks that are often confusing and unnatural.
Opposition to the use of animals for entertainment and displays, both in Canada and worldwide, is significant and growing. Organizations with formal position statements in this area include:
